I had been sent to a psychiatrist at Manchester Royal Infirmary after my 2 nd violent mugging; I wasn’t eating or sleeping. I was now terrified to leave my home and so it had taken several panic attacks just to get to the hospital. My mental health went down fast this time. Nobody talked about self-harm back then.

She was taken to the hospital, and a few days later, they diagnosed her with schizophrenia. She was transferred to the Allen Memorial Hospital in Montreal, a psychiatric hospital housed in an imposing white mansion on Mount Royal. Her way of coping with the family and our situation had stopped working. She just broke.
