Healthcare has always been endlessly fascinating to me, but this work is especially close to my heart. My father decided my brother needed special care, given that he could not be self-sufficient. I also hope that caregivers can prioritize self-care for themselves, too.

Governor Moore’s reasons for championing the legislation may have had something to do with his tenure as head of the Robin Hood Foundation, an anti-poverty nonprofit based in New York. The bill noted in its preamble that only three states in the nation still lacked the authority to institute court-ordered mental healthcare.

We believe in the power of community, and so much of community occurs at the grassroots outside of nonprofits or even state funded services. The police cannot and will not be a part of how people will come to stay at the respite—guests will need to call us themselves and make a decision based in self-determination to stay.
