Psychiatry asserts that it has the medical authority to deem certain people “mentally ill,” and that such people can be forcibly treated because they suffer from “anosognosia” and thus lack awareness that they are ill and in need of treatment. Denial of legal capacity, coercive practices and institutionalization must end.

They believed in the Declaration of Independence, which held “these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” — otherwise known as the American dream. I wanted things to be made right.

Contemporary education readily acknowledges this fact. Why, she can send an email home to John boy’s parents—make them aware of his deficits. And Miss Brown will not be made aware of this until the day of. Mr. Blue is highly educated. His undergrad is in Biology, he has a master’s in education and was trained as a lawyer.

I had some vague awareness that patients occasionally had a “bad reaction” to a pill, but I assumed that these reactions were one in a million and it never crossed my mind that something like permanent genital numbness could occur. As far I am aware, there is zero mention of iatrogenesis in the OCD literature.

Patients often find such a level of self-disclosure about the therapist’s problems burdensome and distracting, and I immediately felt less confidence in her ability to help. And too often he retreated to superficial, self-help maxims—“there is no such thing as perfect”—a “look on the bright side” attitude that trivialized my concerns.
