Daring to argue that depression is not a physical disease

I mentioned the Sunday Times magazine article about Joanna Moncrieff in my last post , where I focused on the issue of whether antidepressants work. I also wanted to pick up what the article says in its introductory rubric about Jo daring to argue that depression is not a physical disease. At face value, saying that depression is not a physical disease may not appear to be so much of a challenge to psychiatry.

From T he Guardian :A coroner has issued a warning about the effects of antidepressants prescribed by a Buckingham Palace doctor to the son-in-law of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent before his suicide. Thomas Kingston, 45, whose marriage to Lady Gabriella at Windsor Castle in 2019 was attended by the late Queen, killed himself last February after suffering adverse effects of medication he had recently been prescribed, an inquest found last month.

New research identifies differing trends in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnoses among adolescents and adults, including an increase among adults from 2020 to 2023. The study found a significant downward trends in ADHD incidence among adults from 2016 to 2020 and adolescents from 2016 to 2018. The ADHD incidence rate remained stable for adolescents in subsequent years.
