T he one-size-fits-all autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis, as configured in the Revised Fifth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM- 5-TR), is a clinical catastrophe. He left the hospital assessment clinic with an autism misdiagnosis and a recommendation for placement in an autism kindergarten.

He said that I had to be taken to my local hospital immediately because I was a danger to myself and others. At my local hospital, the nurses treated me like a criminal. Slamming me onto the hospital bed, two policemen manually restrained my wrists to the unforgiving frame with metal handcuffs. Nothing I said to him mattered.

During his last year of college, Tony was prescribed medications for obsessive-compulsive disorder and anxiety, just as many others on the autism spectrum are prescribed multiple drugs that only contribute to their distress. She also revealed that a neighbor had to take us to the hospital. After a year and a half giving direct care to elderly men on the autism spectrum, I obtained certification as a peer supporter.
