Individuals with other mental disorders may display a disordered relationship with food or their body image but not meet full criteria for BN. Pharmacotherapy : Fluoxetine is the only FDA approved medication for the treatment of bulimia nervosa (in adults) and should be considered as the first-line medication option.

Other psychiatric conditions in the differential diagnosis include mood disorders (increase appetite and weight gain = atypical feature specifier) or borderline personality disorder (binge eating = impulsive behavior criterion). If the full criteria for both disorders are met, both diagnoses can be given.
