Insel is a prime example of a top psychiatrist with exuberance about psychiatry regardless of his awareness of the reality of its repeated failures.

I knew in October of 2018 that Matt was in trouble during a phone call, when he told me in a cheerful voice that he had been to the ER for “mental health reasons” but was “fine.”

It will be easier to dive into the depths of darkness and despair that I went through as a mental health patient if I start with a story of hope. At the age of 41, I was sectioned under the Mental Health Act in the midst of the Covid pandemic in the early autumn of 2020 in the throes of an episode of psychosis.

My sister took antidepressants and my family has a lot of mental health issues, so based on that, I was thrown into the same category. Starting at the age of five I can remember being fearful of her. I became a yoga teacher while working in recruiting and aspired to move my career towards health and wellness.

However, she passed away from childbirth complications at the age of 26.
