I knew in October of 2018 that Matt was in trouble during a phone call, when he told me in a cheerful voice that he had been to the ER for “mental health reasons” but was “fine.” In October 2019, during Matt’s move to a new apartment, I observed that Matt was emotionally paralyzed, unable to pack from lack of sleep.

During my first episode of schizophrenia in 2019, I was taken to our pastor by my mother, sister and a few church members for prayer. The doctor gave me an injection and also placed me on Risperdal, which had side effects such as overeating, excessive sleeping, bloating and agitation.

I t was May 21 st , 2019, when I woke up in a strange hotel-like room drenched in sweat, fully clothed with a winter jacket on and feeling absolutely terrible. Calling it ‘side effects’ is an astronomical understatement; my experience is that nothing can make you more mentally ill than a psychiatric drug. I was simply compensating.
