D uring my first psychiatric hospitalization in 1998, I was strapped down, placed in 4-point restraints, and administered a painful catheter—apparently because I had peed on the floor during the course of my psychotic episode. Captivity By my count (with an assist from my mother) I’ve had 12 psychiatric hospitalizations in my life.

You must trust us to treat him in the way we know best; otherwise he could be in a mental hospital for the rest of his life. I speculate now about withdrawal akathisia, extreme sleep deprivation, spiritual awakening, deep awareness, empathy and sensory experiencing, an invalidating environment, defensiveness, corruption and spiritual attack. I’d made a few attempts to get back to my institutional state job over the years but finally made the return in 2016.

A 2022 large study , lead-authored by Marc Stone at the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, examined 232 drug-company trials on antidepressants submitted to the FDA between 1979 and 2016. Several classic studies indicate that depressed people actually deceive themselves less than nondepressed people.
